OHS Girls Tennis Team In District Play
by Bryan Kime
The Oskaloosa girls tennis team competed at Pella Wednesday for individual District play.
The girls had a very impressive performance as they had five girls competing in the semi final round.
Jillian Jennings and MaKenna Schaffner-Tennis start of the day off early in singles play as they had a pigtail match to start their days respectively. Both would win easily to move on to bracket play. Jillian would then move on to more rounds Before losing to Jessica King from Centerville. Jillian played her best tennis of the season. MaKenna made it through the next two rounds as she beat the number three seeded Alloree Else from Pella. That would put MaKenna in the semi finals with a chance to qualify for state. Even though that match would not end up in her favor she did come back in the consolation to finished third in the districts.
MaKenna had a great run today just coming up a little short but had a great first year of playing tennis.
On the double side of the bracket Lucy Roach an Presley Blommers would cruise to the semi final round with a match up against number one seed Grinnell. The girls battled hard but would come up short, they did battle back and third place also. They battled hard and that’s all we can ask it wasn’t the matchup that we anticipated but these girls will be back next year. The other doubles team consisting of Aubree Blanco an Amanda Fay would also find themselves in the semi finals with a chance to go to state. These two have played really good tennis down the stretch and have put a great two weeks together. Their luck would run out in the semi finals and put them in the consolation where they would play teammates Lucy Roach an Presley Blommers.
Overall the girls as a team battled their hearts out and as coaches we couldn’t be more proud of their effort. It’s been a long time for girls tennis to get this many girls battling for a chance to go to state this late in the tournament and that’s all you can ask as a coach.
