OES Class Chosen In Live Healthy Iowa Kids Contest

Ms. Megan VandeVoort’s 1st Grade Class, or “Little Birds”, had been randomly chosen to win one of four, $500 cash prizes for participating in the Live Healthy Iowa Kids.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – It was a day to be proud! Ms. Megan VandeVoort’s 1st Grade Class, or “Little Birds”, had been randomly chosen to win one of four, $500 cash prizes for participating in the Live Healthy Iowa Kids. That money will make its way towards the physical education program or be used for recess equipment that the entire school can use.
Before the big assembly, where they were to hand over the big check, I had a special opportunity to ask these young people what was easy, and what was difficult to do in order to achieve this goal.
There were many choices the students had to make and then report on. Things like eating more fruits and vegetables and drinking milk and water versus sugar drinks also helped them reach their goal.
A really tough one for many of the students was less “screen time.” This meant less time in front of the TV and more time outside playing and/or reading. This, including “playing catch with my brothers,” and “playing tackle football with my brother” was yet another exciting activity these young people enjoyed during the challenge.
Oskaloosa’s Elementary P.E. teacher Jennifer Peterson helps to coordinate the activity among the different classes.
I know that Ms. VandeVoort’s class will be reading this today, and I want to say a special thank you to them for allowing me to come and ask them so many questions. They were a great class to visit with! Thank You!
