No. 4 Coe storms past Central wrestling team
CEDAR RAPIDS — The Central College wrestling team came away with just one win in dual action against Iowa Conference opponent Coe College Wednesday as the Kohawks justified their No. 4 ranking in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll by cruising past the Dutch, 38-3.
“They’re a solid team top to bottom,” said coach Eric Van Kley. “There isn’t one weak weight class on their roster. They’re a tough team and we tip our hats to them.”
Sophomore TJ Peretti (Auburn, Wash./ Auburn Mountainview HS) earned Central’s only win with a 5-1 decision at 141 pounds, climbing to a 16-9 season mark.
“That was a big win,” said Van Kley. “His opponent was a former national qualifier and TJ just got him gassed by the end of the match. It was a good win against a tough wrestler.”
Van Kley also credited sophomore Kalen Greiner (Keota) at 133 pounds and senior Dan Gordon (Anchorage, Alaska/ Diamond HS) at 197 pounds. After leading in the second period, Gordon lost by a 4-1 decision. Greiner also fell by decision, 5-0.
“I thought our guys put up some solid efforts across the board,” said Van Kley. “We’ll learn from tonight and use it as a way to improve going forward.”
The Dutch take eight days off before returning to Iowa Conference action Feb. 9 when they play host to Simpson College. Competition begins at 7 p.m. from P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium with live video streaming available at www.central.edu/athletics.
