Newman, Steinkamp Collect Statesmen of the Week Laurels

Oskaloosa–Men’s basketball player Karmari Newman (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) and women’s wrestler Catherine Steinkamp (Fr., Quincy, Ill., Biology) have been named the Statesmen of the Week for the week of January 31-February 6, presented by Gardner-Collier Jewelry.

Newman led the Statesmen to two wins, which helped clinch the Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season title. Last Wednesday against Mount Mercy, the senior scored 24 points on 8-for-13 shooting (3-for-7 3-PT). Newman, who was 5-for-5 at the free-throw line, also pulled down two rebounds. In the win, he also broke the school record for career three-pointers with 251.

Three days later, Newman posted another 24-point effort versus MidAmerica Nazarene, going 6-for-14 from the field with a pair of three-pointers. His 10-for-12 effort at the charity stripe included making all four of his tries in the waning seconds of overtime to secure the win. Newman tallied six assists, three rebounds, one block, and one steal as well.

Steinkamp opened her week by claiming a forfeit win in Wednesday’s dual versus Iowa Wesleyan. She then posted both a fall and a technical fall at Saturday’s Grand View Open, finishing one triumph shy of placing in the top six.
