MHP Birthing Center nurses receive advanced certification

OSKALOOSA – Mahaska Health Partnership Birthing Center nurses Jodi Chipman, Kelli Kindley and Chyann McGlothlen have met the requirements for certification in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing by the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing specialties.

Jodi and Kelli became certified in October 2010 and Chyann became certified in March 2011. Chyann, who is also the director of the Birthing Center, said certification offers extensive advantages throughout the healthcare system — benefiting patients and their families, nurses and their colleagues, and the medical practices and facilities that employ these certified professionals.

“It is, quite simply, an asset to the entire nursing field,” Chyann said. “Certification exams are a fair and accurate measure of real-world competency. Thanks to an extensive test-development process, certification exams are a true gauge of a nurse’s ability to provide excellent care.”

The National Certification Corporation (NCC) is a not for profit organization that provides a national credentialing program for nurses, physicians and other licensed health care personnel. NCC’s certification program is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the accreditation body of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA). This accreditation means that NCC’s certification program was subjected to rigorous third-party review and found to meet “the highest national voluntary standards for private certification.”

Chyann said that another Birthing Center nurse, Sharon DeKock, is also RNC-OB certified. “Currently, MHP has four of only 171 certified nurses in Iowa. We are so proud of our nurses who have an expanding knowledge-base needed to function in an increasingly complex health environment.”
