Melvin Orle Silvers, son of Herman and Ina Mae Lundy Silvers, was born at home on a farm near Oskaloosa Iowa on October 11, 1920.
Melvin was raised on his family’s farms, doing chores, riding horses to work and travel. He learned his mechanical ability, which served him well his whole life, as he worked on the farm machinery.
He met his life mate, June (Olivier) Silvers, in 1939. They lived in married love together for 69 years.
During World War II Melvin served from November 1942 until November 1945, with two years’ service in England loading bombs on B17s.
His life’s work revolved around the trucking industry, working with coal, dirt, and clay. He and June founded Silvers Stoneware Clays, which included mining the clay, transporting it to their small farm, and pugging it into bags that were then sold to schools across Iowa.
In the community, Melvin was active in both the United Methodist Church and the Beacon School, which the family’s four children attended, serving many years on the Board of Directors of both.
In 1986 Melvin and June retired to Forsyth, Missouri where they continued involvement with the church. They were also involved with the Ozark Mountain Hospice, coordinating schedules and serving residents by offering transportation to doctor appointments and hospitals.
Melvin spent many fine hours and days fishing on Lake Taneycomo on his pontoon boat.
Melvin and June enjoyed trips around the country, traveling in their camper from coast to coast including several trips to Alaska.
Those left to cherish the strong role Melvin played as the head of his family include his wife, June; three daughters: Connie (& Bob) Allsup of Ava, Missouri, Carol (& Henry) Schuring of Leighton, Iowa, Nancy (& George) Kaywood, of Lenexa, Kansas; a son, Dennis (& Kathy) Silvers of Burnsville, Minnesota; a sister, Beulah (& Carl) Moffett of Mesa, Arizona.
