MaryEllen Gott, age 47, of What Cheer, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on December 1, 2023, at her home in What Cheer. She was born on January 6, 1976, the daughter of William and Phyllis (McCracken) Gecho in Prairie De Chien, Wisconsin.
She attended Eddyville High School and graduated with the Class of 1996. She later received her CNA from Indian Hills Community College.
On May 29, 2021, MaryEllen was united in marriage to Joe Gott.
MaryEllen worked at Excel in Ottumwa and later took a job at Victor Plastics. She also worked at Casey’s General store and then was a CNA in Albia. Lastly, she stayed at home to take care of her father until his passing in 2010.
She enjoyed collecting Boyd’s Bears, arts and crafts and cooking. She had a special love for animals, especially her dogs Sassy and King and her cats, Puff and Tiger.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Gott of What Cheer, her son, Thomas Wiley of Oskaloosa; her stepdaughters, Jody and Cindy Gott; her mother, Phyllis Gecho; a sister, Christina Barnett (Fiancé Nick Rotter); her nieces and nephews, Trenton Barnett, Kaylee Barnett, Cheyenne Barnett (Fiancé Derrick Holeman) and Dakota Barnett. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles and her special family friends Jenny Moore and Austin Fisher.
MaryEllen was preceded in death by her father, William Gecho; a brother, William Gecho Jr; her grandparents; a stillborn son; and her best friends, Merrilee McFadden and Josh McCurdy.
As was her wish, MaryEllen’s body will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held on December 16, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Fremont Community Church.
