Mary Phillips, 83, of Oskaloosa died Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at her home in Oskaloosa.

Mary was born September 18, 1930, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of George and Edna Fritz Phillips. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1949.

Following high school Mary moved to California. After a year in California, she returned to Oskaloosa and went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She retired from Northwestern Bell after 32 years of service.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa. She was also a member of the Pioneer Telephone Operators. Mary loved animals, especially cats, birds and squirrels. She also enjoyed flowers. She was very close with her nieces and nephews, many of them refer to her as their second mom.

She is survived by her sister: Barbara (and Lyal) Fox of Oskaloosa; nieces and nephews: Darlene (and Wayne) Neesham, Ruth Mary Martin, Patricia Phillips, Mike (and Vickie) Phillips, Jack (and Jeanne) Phillips, Carol Ann (and Patrick) Terrazzano, Lyal (and Cara) Fox, Jr., Kathy (and Lance) Dare and Curtis (and Roxanne) Fox; and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and their wives: Francis (and Frances) Phillips, Walt (and Ruth) Phillips and Bob (and Pauline) Phillips; and a great nephew, Robert Neesham.

As was Mary’s wish, her body has been cremated and no visitation is planned.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Stephen’s Memorial Animal Shelter.
