Martinez Officially Hired to Lead Men’s Soccer Program
Oskaloosa–William Penn University Athletics Director Greg Hafner has announced the hiring of Raphael Martinez as Men’s Soccer Coach.
Martinez, who was a graduate assistant under former coach Greg Jarosik, was handed the program on an interim basis when Jarosik departed just before the preseason began. A successful 2013 campaign, though, was more than enough to remove the interim tag. The navy and gold went 10-8-2 (1-4-1 MCC) this fall, highlighted by a pair of four-game winning streaks and the best ten-game start ever (8-2).
William Penn’s winning campaign was its first since 2003 and just the third in school history. With Martinez on the coaching staff the past two seasons, the Statesmen advanced to the semifinals of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament both years.
“I want to thank Greg Hafner for this amazing opportunity,” Martinez said. “William Penn is a university built upon class and professionalism and I am happy to be able to represent such a great institution.”
“I look forward to building a competitive team focused on hard work, dedication, and a drive to win,” Martinez added. “I hope to instill in our players my passion and drive as well as with the hope of bringing an MCC title to William Penn in the near future.”
Martinez becomes the eighth men’s soccer coach at the university.
