The Mahaska Wellness Coalition (MWC) encourages the community to participate in the Live Healthy Iowa 10 Week Challenge. This challenge event is one of several other challenge events sponsored by Live Healthy Iowa including Strut Your Pup, Burst Your Thirst, The Next Step and Healthy Families Challenge. Last year 664 adults in Mahaska County participated in the Wellness Challenge in addition to 1,550 students. Those 664 adults lost 7,684 pounds and more importantly clocked 1,270,000 minutes of activity. The goal is to have those 664 adults participate again and invite a friend to join as well.

To participate simply build teams of 2-10 people. If you are a single participant, no worries, MWC will assist in team building with you or put you in touch with a team in need of participants.

Cost is only $20 per person with online registration which includes a free t-shirt and magazine subscription! Hy-Vee offers a discount of $5 by going to Hy-Vee.com or visiting their store for discount code. Also included are free magazine subscriptions, unlimited access to the Live Healthy Iowa website, weekly motivational emails, opportunity to win prizes, free registration for Winter Iowa Games and Summer Iowa Games Fitness Walk events, and a card for various discounts across the state including waived Mahaska YMCA Join Fees for new members who participate in Live Healthy Iowa.

Register for the challenge now at www.livehealthyiowa.org. Recording your minutes of activity and/or pounds lost begins January 28. The MWC has a coordinator to track progress of Mahaska County teams. Deb Bruxvoort from the Wellness Coalition stated, “To ensure that we have access to the total number of participants in Mahaska County and total minutes of activity or pounds lost (aggregate level data only), please use the assigned group ID LHIMAHASKA when you register.”

Community initiative: A traveling trophy will be awarded to the community with the highest percent of participation. It would great to see Mahaska County have bragging rights to that trophy! Anyone can join, youth teams are also possible. Mahaska County was 5th last year, so moving up the ladder will not be difficult.

Who is involved?: “Oskaloosa School District, Mahaska Health Partnership, Clow Valve, Mahaska County YMCA, MUSCO, Imagine the Possibilities, MidWestOne Bank, the Chamber and more have already made commitments—so far 24 teams. Student numbers will not be included in our 1000 adult participants goal; however they will be counted for our community!” added Deb Bruxvoort.

Change your life! Go to www.livehealthyiowa.org or call 888.777.8881 to register. For more information contact Deann Degroot at the Chamber 641-672-2591 – ddegroot@oacdg.org or Dawn Collins at the YMCA 641-673-8411 – dawn.collins@mahaskaymca.org for more information.
