Letter To The Editor: Nativity Display

Driving past the city square in downtown Oskaloosa last week my heart swelled with joy and pride at the sight of a Nativity display next to the giant Christmas tree. Although I was not present at the lighting of the tree, I felt the sense of community that was involved in making that happen. I was so happy that our city was not one of those that had succumbed to the political correctness that have so many people duped regarding religious displays.

Days later, when I discovered that the manger scene had been removed, I was greatly saddened. I’m sad that, according to the buzz around town, there was one complaint against the display and that the city felt the need to cater to that one voice. I’m sad that there are thousands of Oskaloosa citizens who favor the display who are being deprived of a part of the celebration of our Savior’s birth because of that one voice. I’m sad for the condition of the heart of that one voice that feels so threatened at the display of the Christ-child.

I’m sad, but I’m not discouraged. A wooden manger scene is not my Savior. The Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, comes and lives in the hearts of man, not on the city square. I know that the spirit of Christmas is alive in Oskaloosa regardless of public displays. That is something that one voice or many voices can never squelch.
