Lady Statesmen Take Two at CCSJ Tourney

Whiting, Ind.–The William Penn volleyball team claimed two more wins over the weekend as it competed at the Calumet-St. Joseph Crimson Wave Invitational.

The Lady Statesmen (23-12) opened Friday with a 3-1 win over host Calumet-St. Joseph (25-20, 20-25, 25-12, 25-12), but then later in the day fell 3-2 to Northwestern Ohio (20-25, 25-27, 28-26, 25-22, 9-15).

On Saturday, the navy and gold defeated Michigan-Dearborn 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-13) before ending the weekend with a 3-1 setback to Aquinas (Mich.) (25-17, 18-25, 16-25, 17-25).

Lacey Taylor (Sr., Cedar, Iowa, Elementary Education) paced the offense with 18 kills, while Kylie Giger (Fr., Elkhart, Ind., Undecided) also hit double figures with 14 winners. Katie Rielly (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Digital Communications), with nine kills, and Jeanette Cunningham (Jr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education), with six, also contributed to the win.

Dayna Sammons (So., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) tallied 31 assists, two aces, and 17 digs, while Giger managed one solo block and five block assists.

Northwestern Ohio 3, William Penn 2

Taylor (19) was one of four players in double digits. Giger and Rielly each finished with 12 and Cunningham added 11. Sammons set a career high with 60 assists in addition to five aces and 22 digs. She also tied Rielly with three blocks (two solos and one assist).

William Penn 3, Michigan-Dearborn 0

Taylor and Giger tied for the squad high with eight winners. Rielly produced seven points and Alanna Connors (Jr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology) recorded six more.

Sammons finished with 22 assists and three aces, while Danielle Breeher (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) dug 20 balls. Giger and Cunningham also blocked two attacks (one solo, one assist).

Aquinas 3, William Penn 1

Eleven kills were credited to both Taylor and Cunningham, while Rielly posted eight. Sammons’ 34 assists were a team high, while Breeher had 25 digs. Three different players were a part of two blocks each (one solo, one assist).

Next: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Tuesday to host AIB in Midwest Collegiate Conference play at 7:30 p.m.
