Kronmuller Fourth at Home Tourney

William Penn Women's Athletics

Riverside–Courtney Kronmuller (So., Fountain Valley, Calif., Fullerton CC) came on strong the second day to pace the Penn women’s golf team at the Lady Statesmen Spring Classic Sunday and Monday.

Due to an unfortunate cancellation of her flight back to Iowa, team member Dena Stevens (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) could not participate on Sunday.  Therefore, Penn did not field a team for the two-day event at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course, a par-71 track.

St. Ambrose won the team title at 737 (355-382), holding off Ashford, who is receiving national votes, by six strokes.  Caitlin Childers of St. Ambrose was the meet medalist with a 178 (86-92).

Participants faced incredibly windy conditions both days and cold temperatures (in the 40s) on Monday as scores soared much high than normal (44 rounds were at 100 or above).

Kronmuller led the Lady Statesmen with two consistent rounds of 93 and 90 to tie for fourth at 183.  Her round of 90, including four pars, was the top tally of the day.  Only ten of the 38 players who took on the course both days actually improved from Sunday to Monday (all three from Penn did).

“Courtney is really beginning to come to form,” Lady Statesmen Head Coach Nik Rule said.  “She is becoming confident with her game and her short game has improved remarkably since the fall.  If she continues to work hard in practice and during the off-season, she will become a mainstay in the top ten of every tournament.”

Aubrey Leasure (Jr., St. Peter, Minn., St. Peter HS) placed 30th overall with a 215 (113-102).  The junior made the best improvement from Day 1 to Day 2, shaving 11 strokes off her scorecard.

Presley Joss (So., Osceola, Clarke HS) made her Lady Statesmen debut over the weekend and placed 37th at 226 (114-112).

Stevens was only able to play Monday and carded a 107.

“The scores were very high for all players on all teams this weekend,” Rule said.  “Those are some of the toughest conditions our golfers will ever play in at one of the toughest courses.  On day two, we were the only team to have all of our players improve on their day one score.  I am proud of the way they fought back.”

Next: Penn travels to the Dubuque area this weekend to play in the Clarke Invitational Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday, the teams play at Lacoma GC in East Dubuque, Ill., and on Sunday, they take on Thunder Hills CC in Peosta.
