Karolyn, 71, died Wednesday evening, January 09, 2013, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 5 days.

Karolyn Kay Andersen, daughter of Gerhard Wilhelm and Verda Mae Drahn Kaiser, was born, March 5, 1941, in Monona, Iowa. She was a 1959 graduate of Garnavillo High School and then attended Wartburg College for a year. She went on to graduate from Iowa State University in 1963 with a degree in Home Economics and Education. Her first teaching job was at Oskaloosa High School, where she taught Home Economics from 1963 to 1967. July 23, 1966, Karolyn was united in marriage to Marvin Allan Andersen. After her children were born, Karolyn stayed home to care for them. Karolyn later opened Fins and Things pet store in Oskaloosa, she operated the store for 25 years, retiring in 2007. Her son, Blaine, has continued to operate the store. Karolyn was also co-founder of the Corner Cupboard in Oskaloosa, now known as Hunters. She attended St. John Lutheran Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter NN, Consumer Health and Science Club and a past member of Questers. Karolyn enjoyed collecting antiques, sewing, painting rocks, traveling, and participating in Art on the Square and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.

Her family includes her husband, Marvin of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Kjersten (Jeffrey) Ivarson of Sterling, IL and a son, Blaine Andersen and fiancée, Steffi Gursky, of Oskaloosa; five grandchildren: Anna and Andrew Ivarson, and Jordan, Anjilina and Aria Andersen; and three brothers: David (Marlys) Kaiser of Canada, Ronald (Georgi) Kaiser of Garnavillo, IA and William (Marilyn) Kaiser of Pitman, NJ.

Karolyn was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation: will begin at noon on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 2 – 4 p.m. to greet visitors. Following the visition her body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
