Judy Phillips
Judy Phillips, 63, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born November 22, 1948, at Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Gerrit P. and Geraldine Visscher Terpstra. She graduated from the North Mahaska High School with the class of 1967, and attended one year of college at William Penn. She worked for eight years at the Wilcox Library on William Penn’s Campus. She worked at Pella Corporation for thirty years retiring from there on November 30, 1996. Following her retirement from manufacturing at Pella Corporation, she took a position as a hostess for company parties. On May 11, 1990, she was united in marriage to Gene Phillips at Oskaloosa. Together, Judy and Gene own and operate Wood ‘N’ Stuff Crafts and Toys in the Penn Central Mall in Oskaloosa. Judy loved the store and the customers; she took great pride in how the store looked. She was also always willing to help out with mall activities. She was a very active, lifelong member of the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa where she helped with Vacation Bible School and Sunday school. She was also a member of the Penn Central Railroad Club. Judy enjoyed softball; early on she played in the ladies softball league in Oskaloosa, and later coached for the P.A.L. She also enjoyed model railroading, farm collectables, plastic models, and collecting precious moments. Judy had a servant heart and was always willing to volunteer her time, some of the organizations that benefited from her being so generous with her time include: the Southern Iowa Fair, Pine Wood Derby, Train Shows, and Senior Bingo at the Mall. She and Gene were the hit at many functions giving rides on their life size Thomas and Friends train and cars. She also enjoyed planning and preparing for family gatherings.
Her family includes her husband of over 22 years, Gene Phillips of Oskaloosa; her parents, Gerrit and Geraldine Terpstra of Oskaloosa; two step daughters, Kristi Bridges of Oskaloosa and Kim (& Steve) Dixon of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren, Eric Bridges and Randie Dixon; a brother, Gary (& Elaine) Terpstra of New Sharon; a sister, Kathy (& Scott) Shaw of New Sharon; three nieces, Suzanne Vander Wiel, Shelly (& Shawn) Serba, and Stacy (& Casey) Sammons; a nephew, Kyle (& Heather) Shaw; great nieces and nephews, Cheyenne Shaw, Jaylin Vander Wiel, Gage Shaw, Colton Vander Wiel, Cyler Sammons.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents; and her mother in law, Helen Phillips.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 6, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Don DeGlopper officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the church. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Thursday morning after 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Thursday evening from 5-8 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Central Reformed Church Vacation Bible School or the Southern Iowa Fair.
