Jonathan “Jon” Wayne Hoose, age 32 of Albia, IA, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022, due to injuries sustained in a rafting accident. Jonathan was born on April 3, 1990, to Gregory and Astrid (Nicolas) Hoose, in Fairfield, IA.

Jonathan had lifelong dreams of joining the military and serving people, an aspiration he expressed as a young child and throughout his entire life. A man of conviction, Jonathan did just that. He was a very caring, generous and compassionate person and had a heart of gold. He could bring a smile to anyone’s day, and had the best sense of humor.

Jonathan was home schooled and later received his GED through the military.

In 2008 he began working on his dream of helping others when he received EMT-B training through Indian Hills Community College. A year later he joined the Army National Guard at the age of 19 and served as a combat medic. He served 2 deployments overseas to Afghanistan: his first tour with the 134th out of Washington, Iowa, the last with the 833rd out of Ottumwa, Iowa. Jonathan later returned to Indian Hills Community College where he graduated with 2 Associates degrees. Jonathan worked as an Advanced EMT for the Monroe County Hospital and Clinics for 10 years starting in 2012, where his co-workers and the agencies he worked with closely became part of his extended family.

Jonathan enjoyed being outdoors, hiking, and hunting. He greatly enjoyed hunting with his oldest nephew. He had a big sense of adventure and loved trying new things. He enjoyed grilling food and loved cooking with his mom, especially roast beef, potatoes and turkey for Thanksgiving. He was always planning his next adventure, and showing off the photos of exciting new cuisine he tried. He was an animal lover of all kinds and was especially fond of his cats Jujitsu and Happy, his dogs Harley, Palmer, and Lincoln, and Bryan’s dogs, Beau and Bentley. Above all else, Jonathan loved spending time with his family and friends, leaving behind only a legacy of love and care.

Jonathan is survived by his parents, Astrid (& Ken) Burns and Gregory Hoose; his Wife, Melissa Pothoven Hoose; his sister, Caroline Hoose; his grandmother, Sieglinde Nicolas; a cousin, Norman Klaunig; Nephews, Wesley Pothoven and Nicholas Pothoven; and Melissa’s family.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Dieter Nicolas; Uncle, Dag-Uwe Nicolas, Grandparents, Weldon and Elanor Hoose; Melissa’s grandparents, Edward and Jean Waltz and Melvin and Leona Pothoven; Melissa’s uncle, Lee (& Barbara) Waltz; and Melissa’s aunt, Valerie Waltz.
