Jackson Goal Leads WPU to Historic Win Over #25 Grand View
Des Moines–Over a decade ago, the Statesmen men’s soccer team defeated Grand View for the first time in program history; on Tuesday night, it finally did it for the second time. Courtesy of a second-half goal by Brad Jackson (Fr., Melbourne, Australia, Physical Education), William Penn remained perfect in Heart of America Athletic Conference action by shutting out #25 Grand View 1-0.
WPU (5-3-1, 2-0 Heart) was outshot 12-10, but that deficit became moot when Jackson put a shot into the netting at the 48:23 mark with Randolph Tamba (Jr., Firestone, Liberia, Information Technology) and Angelo Kelly (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) assisting on the goal. The score is Jackson’s second.
Max Stamer (Fr., Salzgitter, Germany, Secondary Education), who tallied four saves, and the rest of the Statesmen made it stick as the navy and gold defeated the Vikings (3-4-1, 1-1 Heart) for the first time in 17 tries (2-20 all-time); the last win was a 2-1 conference tournament decision back on November 6, 2002. GVU was ranked in that contest as well (#12). It is believed that Tuesday’s win is the team’s first over a ranked opponent since that 2002 matchup.
“This is a fantastic result and a great performance,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “The guys really wanted the win and they, especially the seniors, fully deserved it. Every player did their job and executed the game plan correctly. I am very proud of our team. It is now time to prepare for Avila. Go Statesmen!”
