Iowa Senate District 47 race still undecided
It is still not over. A tight race in Iowa Senate District 47 has resulted in a recount. Incumbent Democrat Senator Keith Kreiman filed the request for a recount on Friday after being defeated by 12 votes. The recount was for Wapello County only. Senate District 47 encompasses not only Wapello County, but also Davis, Appenoose and Wayne Counties. Wapello County was the only county that Senator Kreiman won. According to recount rules, both candidates will now select a representative from their respective campaigns to serve on a recount board.
Those two representatives will then select a third person to serve on the board. The designees are required to meet by this Tuesday. They must select a third representative for the board by this Thursday at 8 am. If they can’t decided on a third person, then the Chief Judge of the 8th Judicial District, Judge James Blomgren, will select a third candidate. He is required to do this no later than 5 pm Saturday November 20th.
After the recount board is formed, the Wapello County Auditor will give the ballots to them to count. The board will decide whether they want to do a machine or a hand recount. During the actual recount, a member of the Wapello County Auditors office must be present at all times. The recount board is also required to file a recount report with the final numbers from the recount by November 27th. The Wapello County Auditor then has until November 29th to file the report with the Iowa Secretary of State’s office in time for the state canvass of the votes.
