Iowa Conference all-sports standings has Central at No. 4
PELLA — With all 19 sports factoring into the equation, the Central College athletics department finished fourth in the Iowa Conference All-Sports Championship Trophy standings.
The combined All-Sports Championship Trophy is based on the finishes of both the men’s and women’s standings. The Dutch women earned a third-place finish in the in the Marjorie Giles Women’s All-Sports Trophy while the men were fourth in the Elmer Hertel Men’s All-Sports Trophy.
Wartburg College took the overall title after winning the women’s and taking second in the men’s.
Nine points are awarded in each sport for a conference title, and the points are allocated in descending order so that the last-place team gets one point. Central’s women finished with 43.7 points while the men accumulated 50.2.
On the women’s side, the Dutch did not win a conference title, but had runner-up finishes in golf, soccer and softball. The tennis team added a third-place finish and the outdoor track team was fourth.
The Central men’s outdoor track and field program earned the school’s only conference title in 2017-18. The Dutch men were also runners-up in football, indoor track and field and golf.
Overall, 10 Central teams finished in the top-four of the conference and 12 were in the top-five of their respective sport.
Central has won the men’s all-sports title 14 times and the women’s all-sports title nine times.
