This is no breaking news or anything but common sense isn’t so common anymore in Washington D.C. As we continue to rack up billions of dollars each day onto our already 16 trillion dollar debt, the politicians in Washington continue to bicker over what to do.

Just last week we watched the same old politicians do the same old thing. They passed a bill that did not address the problem. So what is the problem? Spending of course! When we spend 3.8 trillion dollars, but only bring in 2.2 trillion dollars, I don’t really think it is because we don’t tax enough. I think it is that we spend too much. Common sense would tell us that we need to cut spending as much as we can without hurting the U.S. economy.

The reason why Washington spends so much is because we have let them for so many years. I have talked with many people, and know many people that just say they do not care at all or that they pay attention but don’t do anything because they don’t believe they can make a difference. First off, you should pay attention to politics because it affects everything you do. Secondly, you can make a difference. You don’t need a title to make a difference. You can make a difference by calling your representative or Senator or Governor or any politician and making sure that they know how you feel. You can show up to the meetings when they come to town, and let them know how you feel. You can donate your time or money to people who you think would make a good public official. Or get involved in organizations that are involved or have an influence in government. Believe it or not but the reason why some of the politicians do what they do is because no one is watching. No one is holding their feet to the fire. They do what they do because most of their constituents just vote and don’t stay involved afterwards.

Now, that is part of the problem. The other part of the problem is that we elect people with no common sense. They don’t understand the concept of how massive our deficit is and how extremely massive our debt is. This debt is unbearable, period. We have to do something about it, and personally I think we really missed our chance of doing something about it soon in this last election. I could care less whether they were Republican or Democrat, but we need to elect people that have an understanding and passion to tackle this problem.

This is why I am involved in politics. To get people elected that understand what they are doing, that have common sense, and will fight with all of their energy and soul to restore the fiscal principles to this country. It was our founder’s vision that the American people hold their elected officials feet to the fire. After all, our politicians work for us, we don’t work for them. So when the politicians come into town with a town hall meeting, or a bill comes up in the session you don’t like or approve of than I hope you challenge yourself to make sure that the politicians hear what you are saying. We don’t have to settle with the “go with the flow politics.” We don’t have time to play “go with the flow politics.” So when 2014 rolls around, and we get ready to vote. Make sure you vote for a person that will listen, and fight for fiscal responsibility because that is just the common sense thing to do.

Sincerely,

Austin Harris
