Glen Newell

Glen E. Newell, 92, of Oskaloosa, and formerly of Rose Hill, died Thursday, September 8, 2011, at Oskaloosa Care Center, Oskaloosa. He was born January 24, 1919 in Mahaska County, near Fremont. On January 10, 1942, he was united in marriage to Ruth Koogler at Lancaster, Missouri. He served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was a P-38 F5 photo reconnaissance pilot stationed at Moratia (Dutch East Indies). Following his discharge, he farmed in Mahaska County in West Des Moines township for over twenty years. They then worked for and maintained Camp Wapsie Y at Coggon, Iowa for several years. They moved to Rose Hill in 1977, and Glen worked for Mahaska Farm Service. Lastly, he worked for the City of Oskaloosa as parks superintendent for ten years before retiring. In retirement, Glen worked part-time for the parks department for another nine years until totally retiring. They moved from Rose Hill into Oskaloosa in the 2005. He was a member of the Rose Hill Community Church; the American Legion, V.F.W., and the National P-38 Association.

His family includes his wife, Ruth Newell of Oskaloosa; a son: Dennis Newell of Oskaloosa; two daughters: (Barbara) Jean Dannen of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Carol (& Gary) Helwig of Knoxville; four grandchildren: Patrick (Tara) Helwig, Bryan Helwig, Jill (George) Larson, and Ross Dannen; four great grandchildren: Brock, Boston, and Reed Helwig, and Alex Larson. Also surviving is a sister in law: Bonnie Newell of Oskaloosa, and a brother in law: Kenneth Hunt of Lacey.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters: Maxine Baltimore, Doris Gerard, Helen McLoney, Leona Moore, Dorothy Slycord, Opal Mattix, and Darlene Hunt; and three brothers: Dale, Don, and Dean Newell.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 12, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Del Bittner officiating. Burial will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery, east of Oskaloosa, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W., and D.A.V. Visitation will begin at the funeral chapel Sunday 12 Noon, and the family will be at the funeral chapel Sunday from 1 – 3 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Rose Hill Community Church.
