George Fisher, 85, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Rose Hill, died Saturday, January 5, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Health and Rehab. Center in Ottumwa.
George was born January 8, 1927, in Iowa County, Iowa the son of George C. and Jeannie Belle Moore Fisher. He served in the United States Army from 1945-1946. On April 19, 1947, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Winegardner at Oskaloosa. Following their marriage George farmed near Rose Hill. They also owned and operated Fisher’s Grocery in Rose Hill from 1960-1966. George went to work for Amana Refrigeration in 1965 and stayed there until 1977. While working at Amana he continued to farm. In 1977 he went to work at Rolscreen, now Pella Corporation, in Pella, he retired from there in 1989. He was a member of the Oskaloosa American Legion and a former member of the Oskaloosa Eagles. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes, woodworking, carpentry work and doing home improvements. He also enjoyed playing his fiddle, playing cards, fishing, and camping. He was a good dancer and delighted in dancing with his grandchildren.
His family includes his wife of over 65 years, Geraldine Fisher of Oskaloosa; three children, Barbara Marshall of Columbia, Missouri, Dennis (& Patricia) Fisher of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Lealon (& Rebecca) Fisher of Great Lakes, Illinois; nine grandchildren, Geri Sinaurd, Sarah Morefield, Jeremy Lemon, Brian Fisher, Matthew Fisher, Melanie Fisher, Michael Fisher, Laura Fisher and Kaleb Carroll; and nine great grandchildren, Elyce, Gabrielle, Erin, Courtney, Kiersten, Kenzie, Diante, Jenna, and John Michael.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Gregory Fisher; two brothers, Leo Fisher and Glen Fisher; and three sisters, Lois Gallagher, Mildred Fisher, and Bessie Robertson.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Del Bittner officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Graveside Military Rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Rose Hill Community Church or Alzheimer’s Association.
