SERIES HISTORY: William Penn is 6-1 all-time in its series against Taylor, including winning the last meeting 44-19 in 2010.

The Statesmen led just 16-7 at halftime, but rolled in the second half. Six players rushed for over 50 yards, highlighted by 98 from P.J. Perry. Taylor Parsons (Sr., The Woodlands, Texas, Sociology) added 82 yards and Shawn Davis (Sr., Hamersville, Ohio, Physical Education) managed 74.

The defense bent but did not break, preventing the Trojans from scoring any points in three different red zone trips.

WILLIAM PENN PROFILE: Todd Hafner is in his tenth year as head football coach at William Penn, entering this fall with a 61-40 career record.

Hafner, who became the program’s all-time winningest coach last fall, guided William Penn to 28 wins over the last three years. The Statesmen led the NAIA in rushing all three regular seasons. William Penn shared the Midwest League crown in 2010 and 2012.

The 2008 and 2010 Midwest League Coach of the Year, Hafner was also the recipient of the VSN NAIA Coach of the Year and the NFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year honors in 2010. As skipper, he has produced 139 all-conference players and 14 All-Americans.

Hafner graduated from Pittsburg State in 1994.

A fourth-quarter rally shocked William Penn in a 24-23 loss to NCAA Division II Truman last Saturday.

In a game of streaks, the Bulldogs scored the first ten points, but the Statesmen responded with 23 of their own to lead 23-10 entering the final quarter.

Unfortunately, Truman produced two scoring drives in the last minutes to come from behind.

Evan Ressler (Jr., Cascade, Iowa, Biology) led the offense with 164 rushing yards, while Tyler Hafner (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Undecided), starting in place of Parsons, picked up an additional 113 yards.

Isaac Samek (So., Bolivar, Mo., Industrial Technology) paced the defense with ten tackles, while Nick DiMarco (Jr., St. Charles, Mo., Physical Education) recovered two fumbles and returned one for touchdown. DiMarco also sacked the Truman quarterback twice.

The junior is first nationally in sacks and sacks per game and is also in the top five in tackles for loss and tackles for loss per game. William Penn’s 3.5 sacks per game are ninth in the NAIA.

The Statesmen have forced two turnovers this year.

Marcus Kerrigan (Sr., Cary, Ill., Sociology) is perfect in extra points (7-for-7), but is 3-for-6 in field goals. The senior is again pairing up with Jason Johnson (Sr., Geneseo, Ill., Industrial Technology) to make a strong punting duo. Johnson has punted six times for a 43.5 yard clip, while Kerrigan has five attempts for a 38.2 mark.

Jacob Batterson (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Industrial Technology) is tops in the kick return game with a 23.5 yard average (four attempts).

William Penn is picked to finish third in the MSFA Midwest League.

TAYLOR PROFILE: Ron Korfmacher is in his six season as head coach at Taylor. He owns a 26-28 record entering this fall.

An AFCA Co-Regional Coach of the Year in 2009, Korfmacher served as an assistant for more than two decades before taking the reins.

Korfmacher is a graduate of Taylor and also received his Master’s from Ball State University.

The Trojans scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally past NCAA Division II Lane 27-21 last Saturday.

Taylor escaped despite being outgained 500-297. The hosts did force four Lane turnovers.

Taylor is picked to finish sixth in the MSFA Mideast League.

COACH HAFNER SAYS: On the Truman Game: “It was a tough loss to take, but I thought our kids played very well. We matched or exceeded their physicality and gave ourselves a chance to win the game. We will work this week on finishing plays and finishing games.”

On Taylor: “Taylor is a very talented and fast football team. They have good players on both sides of the ball and execute their schemes at a high level. We must go in with the mindset that we have to play every play like it determines the outcome of the game.”
