Five Statesmen in Double Figures as Coach Henry Collects Win #400

Marshall, Mo.—The Statesmen were back in action again on Saturday and looking to bounce back from a tough loss earlier in the week.

William Penn (7-1, 2-1 Heart) bounced back in a big way by pummeling Missouri Valley (3-4, 1-2 Heart) 107-86.

While there were three ties early on in the ballgame, WPU never trailed and led by as many as 25 points. William Penn shot the ball at an uber-efficient .597 clip while holding its opponent to just a .344 clip. The visitors also had the edge from beyond the arc, outshooting the Vikings .391-.273 from three-point territory.

Five Statesmen managed to find themselves in double-figures scoring led by Karmari Newman (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) who posted 25 points on 8-16 shooting and 7-14 from three. Dexter Hood (Sr., Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and Q Cager (Jr., Hopkinsville, Ky., Wellness and Recreation) filled up the stat sheets. Hood scored 18 points while assisting five times and grabbing eight boards. Cager poured in 18 of his own dishing it six times and collecting seven rebounds. Nathan Gehring (Jr., Waukee, Iowa) collected his second double-double of the season finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ahmad Pender (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Wellness and Recreation) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points.

Eddie Daley (Jr., DeWitt, Mich., Business Management) provided a big spark off the bench collecting a game-high 13 rebounds.

William Penn edged Missouri Valley on the boards, outrebounding the home team 53-44 and outscored them 60-46 in the paint.

The win for the Statesmen is the 400th in the career of Head Coach John Henry.

“We were pretty good defensively tonight. We had a large number of turnovers but I liked the fast tempo.” said Coach Henry, “I want to thank every single player who has ever played in my tenure as head coach here at William Penn. I want to thank Brandon Lehart, Joe Mckinstry , Blake Sandquist and every assistant coach that we have had here. Getting 400 wins is a celebration for all the players and coaches not just me.”

Next Up: William Penn will have a quick turnaround as they will host Great Lakes Christian on Sunday in Oskaloosa with tip-off scheduled for 2 pm.
