Dolores was surrounded by her family when she finished her long and courageous battle with cancer and went home to be with her Savior on Thursday at the Mahaska Health Partnership Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
Dolores B. Poe, daughter of Edward and Bernice Brummel Goemaat, was born, November 25, 1940, east of Oskaloosa. She attended school in Rose Hill and was a 1958 graduate of Fremont High School. Dolores married the love-of-her life, Roy Poe, July 3, 1959, at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. They lived near Rose Hill until 1960, when Roy entered the service and Dolores joined him at Fort Belvoir near Washington, DC. After Roy’s discharge in 1962, they returned to Iowa and made their home in Knoxville. In 1975, they moved to the Goemaat family farm near New Sharon. Dolores provided child care in her home for 38 years, caring for dozens of children. The children fondly called her “Dee Dee” and she loved each of them as if they were her own. Dolores retired from child care in 2000 and she and Roy moved to Oskaloosa in 2009.
Dolores’ children, grandchildren and great grandson were the delight of her life; she cherished each of them and the time they spent together. Dolores had a special gift for writing cards and letters; she always took special care in finding just the right words of congratulations, encouragement or sympathy. She was also an exceptional cook and baker, her family and friends will miss the delicious “feasts” she prepared and shared with them. Dolores enjoyed going to gospel concerts and she was a life long member of Central Reformed Church; her faith was the foundation on which her life was built. Dolores was a prayer warrior; she always prayed for others and put their needs before her own, even in the midst of her own struggle.
Dolores’ family includes her husband, Roy, of Oskaloosa; three sons and daughters-in-law: Randy and Brenda Poe of Oskaloosa; Rick and Michele Poe of Des Moines and Rob and Amy Poe of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Lindsey (Jordan) Engbers, Leah Poe and fiancé, Cole Rolffs, Jessie Poe, Becca Poe, Ryan Poe, Cole Poe, Jake Poe and Rylee Poe; one great grandson, Dylan; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Eleanor Veldhuizen of Oskaloosa and Lois and Cornelis Hol of Oskaloosa; and a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Glenda Goemaat of New Sharon. In addition to her parents, Dolores was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Goemaat; and a granddaughter, Mylee Poe.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Serenity House or Central Reformed Church.
