Dog Hollow Offers A Chance To Look Back In Time

Dog Hollow Rendezvous 2016

Seeing demonstrations and learning about nearly lost arts and techniques is part of what makes the frontier encampments so interesting for man.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – It’s August, and the annual Dog Hollow Rendezvous has returned. This year, it’s in a new location at the Nelson Pioneer Farm. The multi-day event begins on Friday and goes through Sunday, weather permitting. Opening hours are from 10am to 4pm on those days, with the exception of Sunday.

For local frontiersman Jim Walker, sharing his knowledge of the skills needed to survive in the days of Daniel Boone is only part of the reason he loves to participate in such events. His friendships, with many others from around the Midwest, draw him back year after year.

Things didn’t start off so well for the campers at the rendezvous on Thursday night. Mother Nature did her best, and blew down several tents, but that is normal for this group. They joined together to get things back up as quickly as possible. “It wouldn’t be Dog Hollow without a storm”, said Walker.

Skills like knife throwing and hawking will be on display. Crafts skills, and many other techniques, will be discussed and shared. Members, who want to make extra money, will have their crafts on display and for sale during the two day event.

Nelson Pioneer Farm and the rendezvous can been taken in for $7.00 a person, or for $20.00 per car load.
