David LaVern Marshall, 92, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, July 1, 2022, at the MHP Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was born February 28, 1930, at his parent’s home in Pershing, Iowa, the son of Albert and Faye (Kaldenberg) Marshall.

David attended Attica High School and graduated with the Class of 1948.

On December 27, 1950, David was united in marriage to Dorothy Arkema in Unionville, Missouri.

In the spring of 1951, “Dave” joined the United States Army and served his country on the front lines as a medic during the Korean War. He was proud of his military service and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in 1953.

After his service to his country, Dave returned to Iowa and worked at the Knoxville Veterans Hospital for 35 years. During his years at the hospital, he also worked as part time barber in Leighton and Tracy. At the age of 55 he officially retired in 1985, but helped his son Barry, with his ServiceMaster and Sears Hometown Store businesses.

Dave was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. He was a former member of the Christian Reformed Church in Tracy and was a current member of the Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa. During his younger years, Dave enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Later in life he loved golfing and was proud of his 8 hole-in-one’s he hit over the years. Dave hit one of these hole-in-ones on the same round where his son, Barry, also got a hole-in-one. Both of them were featured in the Iowa PGA Magazine for this feat. He also did some woodworking and was a talented fast-pitched softball player. Above all else, Dave was a proud family man who enjoyed spending time with his loved ones.

His family includes his wife, Dorothy Marshall of Oskaloosa; a son, Barry (& Jeanne) Marshall; his grandchildren, Alexis (& Justin) Shipman, Kyle Marshall, and Kayla Bucklin; his great grandchildren, Marshall Seibert and Astrid Bucklin; and his step-great grandchildren, Nick Shipman and Kaylia Shipman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilbur Marshall; and his sisters: Maxine Toigo, Alberta Morrill, Bernice Provenzano, Myrna Weldon, Sandra Zellmer and Leora Marshall (in infancy).
