Daniels leads, Iversen returns for Central at Wartburg heptathlon
WAVERLY — Central College men’s track and field athletes Will Daniels (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) and Reese Iversen (senior, Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) generated some excitement with their first-day efforts at the Wartburg Select heptathlon.
Daniels is in first place through the first four events, leading the field with 3,082 points while second place has just 2,650. He cleared the bar 6 feet, 10.75 inches in the high jump, clocked in at 7.06 seconds in the 60-meter dash and launched 22-3.5 in the long jump, all new career-best marks.
“Will was incredible,” associate head coach Jim Fuller said. “When Eric Larson scored 5,399, the school record, his day one total was 3,001 points. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”
Iversen had not competed in a heptathlon since his freshman season at the 2015 Iowa Conference Indoor Championships. Friday’s first four events showed promise as Iversen is in third place with 2,567 points. He had the second best high jump at 6-2.25 and set a new career-best in the shot put (36-5.75)
“It was good to see him do it again,” Fuller said. “He was solid all day long. I was happy with his marks.”
The remaining three events of the heptathlon, the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run will start at 8 a.m. The Wartburg Select will begin in its entirety with field events at 9:30 a.m. and track events at 11 a.m.
