Coppess sets pace for Central College women’s golf team
COUNCIL BLUFFS — Central College sophomore Brittany Coppess (Clinton) shot an opening round 79 at the Bent Tree Showcase Sunday to help the women’s golf team sit in second place.
“It was great to see Brittany play really well today,” said coach Tim Wilkinson. “She started off pretty well with a couple birdies.”
As a team, Central recorded a 338 which places the team 20 strokes behind Iowa Western Community College.
Coppess is alone in eighth place, junior Alison Kretzinger (Johnston) fired an 85, placing her in 16th, freshman Emily Opsal (Verona, Wis., Verona Area HS) carded an 86, tying for 17th and junior Molly Timmerman (Dubuque) shot 89 on the par-72 5,805-yard Bent Tree Golf Club, placing her in a tie for 24th.
Playing as an individual, freshman Lexie Patton (Aurelia, Alta-Aurelia HS) carded an 84, tying for 13th.
“Overall it was a good day today,” said Wilkinson. “We’re excited to get back out there tomorrow after being able to get used to the speed of the greens. I think we will be a little more comfortable on the course tomorrow.”
Central continues play Monday morning. The Dutch travel to Peosta Saturday for the Loras Spring Invitational at Thunder Hills Country Club.
