Conference soccer season starts with a win for Dutch women
DECORAH — The Central College women’s soccer team got an early goal from Rachel Daniels (junior, forward, Geneseo, Ill.) and never relinquished the lead in a 2-0 victory against Luther College Saturday afternoon.
The Dutch (6-2-1, 1-0-0 American Rivers Conference) recorded their sixth shutout of the season against the Norse (3-6-0, 0-1-0 conference). Jasmyn Bush (sophomore, La Porte City, Union HS) had nine saves in goal.
“We’re a very tough team to break down,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “Jasmyn and our backline are a big part of that but our overall team defending is good.”
Luther fired off 20 total shots but only nine landed on frame. Central only had six total shots, but four were on frame and two were goals.
Daniels connected on her second goal of the season in the 13th minute.
“Abby Frey (junior, midfielder, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) played it in and Rachel had a beautiful redirect volley into the side netting,” Kobylinski said.
Junior defender Bridget Lynch (Northglenn, Colo., Jefferson Academy) converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute to make it 2-0.
The Dutch have a 4:30 p.m. match at North Park University (Ill.) in Chicago on Wednesday.
“North Park is going to be a tough opponent in a tough place to play,” Kobylinski said. “If we keep taking care of what we can control, we’ll leave it all out on the field and give it a good match on Wednesday.”
