Community Forum Connects Oskaloosa Leaders with Residents

OSKALOOSA, IOWA – The 2025 “Coffee and Conversation” previously known as Eggs and Issues, brought together Mahaska County and Oskaloosa residents and local leaders on Saturday morning, at Smokey Row Coffee in Oskaloosa. The event served as an open dialogue for community members to engage with city and county officials on pressing issues.

Key Highlights

Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt outlined the city’s priorities for 2025, including the search for a new city manager and finance director following announced retirements. Major projects include the reconstruction of the recreational and competition pools at the YMCA and ongoing compliance with Iowa Department of Natural Resources mandates for wastewater treatment improvements.

City and county officials also discussed challenges posed by state-imposed property tax caps. The reduced revenue growth is prompting local governments to reassess funding priorities, including economic development initiatives, public safety, and maintaining city services.

Infrastructure and Development Updates

The forum addressed progress on the Southeast Connector, a $14 million project involving the city, county, and Iowa Department of Transportation. The project is designed to ease truck traffic in Oskaloosa’s downtown and improve connectivity. Officials emphasized the need for strategic planning to maintain downtown activity despite traffic changes brought by new bypass routes.

Housing development was another focus, with updates on residential projects and efforts to attract developers to address the community’s housing needs. Plans include mixed-use facilities and incentives for developers to invest in Oskaloosa.

Mental Health and Rural Services

County supervisors highlighted ongoing efforts to expand mental health services and improve rural infrastructure, including a project to provide high-speed internet access to all rural areas. Officials also emphasized the importance of partnerships with local organizations to address funding gaps for essential services.

Community Engagement

The forum underscored the importance of civic engagement and collaboration to tackle local challenges. Upcoming events, including a session with state legislators, aim to continue fostering dialogue and progress in Oskaloosa.

The next “Coffee and Conversation” forum is scheduled for Saturday, January 25.
