City to Buy New Dump Truck

Oskaloosa City Hall

by Amy Langdon

The Oskaloosa City Council approved the purchase of a new $141,572 dump truck. Mayor Dave Krutzfedlt said at Monday’s meeting that the truck will allow staff to better haul equipment and make repairs around the city.

The meeting also included a public hearing regarding weed maintenance. The council is considering a resolution that would charge property owners if weeds get too high and the city steps in to cut them. The only comment came from Larry Clabaugh who suggested that weed cutting was outside the city’s jurisdiction.

Sherry Vavra presented a quarterly report of the Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation. Some updates included lots of tournaments held at Lacey, batting cages have been added, skate park has more activity than anticipated, and tram rides on the trail have reached 1,000 visitors this season.

The council also discussed the sale of multiple alley spaces, including those adjacent to 907 South 7th Street, 909 South 7th Street, 702 8th Avenue East and 402 North I Street. All alleys were analyzed by the city zoning committee and those affected by the sale were surveyed before the sale is recommended to the city council. Further readings are required before the sales are approved.

In other city business, the council:

– Approved a site plan remodeling the old Earl May building by Community 1st Credit Union Bank.

– Passed the first reading of code change that would move the start time of council meetings from 6:30 to 6:00.
