Chegwidden, WPU Win Crowns as 54-Hole Marks Fall
Lawrence, Kan.–Another week of play resulted in another crown–and two new school records–as the Statesmen men’s golf team took the gold at the Baker Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
William Penn finished first out of 11 teams with a 54-hole score of 888 (292-305-291) at the par-72 Eagle Bend Golf Course. The squad was just four shots ahead of Evangel after Monday’s 36 holes, but pulled away Tuesday as its 291 was 11 strokes better than the next-lowest score. WPU, which has won three tournaments in a row, was the only team to break 300, doing so twice.
WPU’s 54-hole tally of 888 breaks the old school mark of 893.
The tournament featured domination by Zachary Chegwidden (Fr., Essex, England, Business Management) with everyone else fighting for second. The freshman opened with a four-under 68 and then followed it up with another red score of three-under 69. His final round 73 allowed him to finish at six-under 210 which broke the old 54-hole individual record of 216. He won the event–his third of the season–by 12 strokes.
Frederik Lundsgaard (Jr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) and Clay Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Elementary Education) were also strong on the links, joining Chegwidden in the top 10 as they tied for sixth at 225. Lundsgaard posted scores of 72-78-75, while Tucker’s cards read 76-79-70; Tucker’s third-round 70 was the best 18 on Tuesday.
Sebastian Rulis (Jr., Denmark, Business Management) at 229 (76-80-73) was 14th overall, while Brandon Dizon (Sr., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) tied for 18th at 234 (78-79-77).
Zach Swink (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Sociology) also fared well as an individual, tying for 20th at 235 (78-81-76).
