Charlotte was born on March 14, 1923, on the family farm near Keswick, Iowa to John and Charlotte Wagner O’Rourke. She attended rural school and graduated with the Class of 1941 from Keswick High School. She attended a beauty school in Ottumwa following high school. On January 23, 1942, she was married to Charles Edward Pirkl in Williamsburg, Iowa. The couple operated a grain and dairy farm south of Victor for 35 years. Charlotte was a mother of eight children and assisted with the farm operation. She also worked part-time as a hairdresser.
She was a member of Saint Bridget Catholic Church, the O.C.C.W. and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed dancing in her early years and attending her children’s sporting and school activities. She was also an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Survivors include her children, Charlene (Wayne) DeMeulenaere of Hartwick, Bill (Phyllis) Pirkl of North English, Jim (Mary) Pirkl of Belle Plaine, Tom (Linda) Pirkl of Grinnell, Shirley Behrens of Marengo, and Bob Pirkl, Don (Diane) Pirkl and Paul (Patty) Pirkl, all of Victor; 23 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Agnew of Williamsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Tom, Leo, Mike and Eugene O’Rourke; and two sisters, Agnes Kosman and Catherine Fedro.
Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Cemetery in Victor or to Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo.
