Central women’s tennis squad blanked by Grinnell

Grinnell — A shorthanded Central College women’s tennis team struggled against a talented Grinnell (4-0) team Tuesday, suffering a 9-0 defeat.

The Dutch were missing Kayla Donner (senior, Metamora Ill., Metamora Township HS) and Chelsea Johnson (junior, Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon HS) at the number two and three singles spot. The new line-up featured four freshmen and the untested players couldn’t keep pace with Grinnell.

“They are a very good team,” said coach Steve Tyler. “They just had more experienced players than us.”

Despite the outcome, Tyler credited the effort put forth by the squad. Senior Emily Swartz (Eldora, South Hardin HS) fought a hard match at number one singles, with a few errant shots contributing to the 8-3 defeat.

“I can’t ask any more of them,” said Tyler. “Everybody battled and showed courage. I’m proud of that.”

Central (2-4) has three days to prepare for a home match against Iowa Conference opponent Wartburg at 9 a.m. Sept. 17.

“We’ve got an opportunity to use today’s lessons,” said Tyler.
