Central tennis teams, nine players win academic awards

PELLA— Central College’s men’s and women’s tennis teams have landed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award.

Meanwhile, nine student-athletes captured ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition.

The men’s squad, which also received the honor last year, compiled a 3.23 combined team grade point average (4.0 scale) and posted an 8-13 overall record. The Dutch women tallied a 3.27 GPA and had an 11-12 mark. Both teams finished sixth in the Iowa Conference.

To receive the team distinction, a squad’s combined GPA must be a 3.2 or above.

Four men and five women were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. To qualify for the individual honor, student-athletes must be a varsity letterwinner, have attended the institution at least two semesters and achieve a 3.5 or higher GPA for the academic year.

Juniors Kyle Freischlag (junior, Downers Grove, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and John Seier (junior, Waverly, Neb., Waverly HS) received Scholar-Athlete distinction for the second straight year. The duo was joined by David Bouska (senior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) and Josh Forst (sophomore, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS).

Recent graduate Riley Taylor (Tama, South Tama HS) and senior Chelsea Johnson (Mount Vernon) led the women’s team with 4.0 marks. The pair was joined by Nicole Curran (junior, Cedar Falls, Northern University) and recent graduates Emily Swartz (Eldora, South Hardin HS) and Kayla Donner (Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS).
