Central cruises to an 8-1 women’s tennis victory
PELLA—The Central College women’s tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season, surrendering just one loss in an 8-1 victory over Northwestern (Iowa) Friday.
The Dutch got an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles from seniors Sara Dale (Marshalltown) and Stephanie Gibbons (Ankeny) and an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles from Emily Swartz (junior, Eldora, South Hardin HS) and Chelsea Johnson (sophomore, Mount Vernon).
At No. 1 singles, Dale won her third straight match, 6-1, 6-4. Gibbons battled at No. 2 before taking the third-set tiebreaker 1-0. Swartz, Carissa Bane (senior, Des Moines, Southeast Polk HS) and Johnson were easy winners at Nos. 3, 4 and 5, respectively, and Cairn Reisch (freshman, Kalamazoo, Mich., Ostego HS) won a tiebreaker to claim No. 6 singles.
The Red Raiders drop to 3-4, snapping a three-game win streak.
The Dutch (1-2 spring) continue tennis action Saturday, facing Simpson College (0-5 spring) at noon at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts. Central topped Simpson 8-1 in the regular season before snagging a 7-1 win in the Iowa Conference tournament last fall.
