Central 7th in Division I men’s golf tourney

GREEN BAY, WIS.—The final round only got tougher for the Central College men’s golf squad.

The Dutch continued to struggle keeping big numbers off the scorecard as Central tied for seventh in the NCAA Division I Wis.-Green Bay Invitational.

Central shot 312-318—630 on a windy day at the par-72 Green Bay Country Club. Butler University rallied to capture the tournament title at 300-306—606 and St. Ambrose University followed at 300-308—608. Central was the only Division III school in the field.

“It was windier and a tougher day,” coach Chad Green said. “We didn’t putt well and continued to post big numbers. If we avoid that we make up the strokes.”

Freshman Desmond Stoll (Lockport, N.Y., Lockport HS) tied for 12th in the individual standings with 75-79—154, a highlight of the opening fall season tournament.

“The bright spot of the weekend was Desmond’s play,” Green said. “He did very well for his collegiate debut on a hard course in a Division I tournament.”

Brent Goodenow (senior, Johnston) tied for 22nd, carding 82-76—158 and Justin Livingston (junior, Winterset) shot 78-82—160 for 32nd place. Brent Messmore (senior, Hudson) shot 77-85—162 and Drew Osier (junior, Austin, Minn.) had 84-81—165. Competing unattached, David Watson (sophomore, San Diego, Calif., Patrick Henry HS) had 81-86—167 and CJ Gaston (senior, Keosauqua, Van Buren HS) shot 78-91—169.

The Dutch travel to Dubuque for the Clarke Invitational at the Thunder Hills Country Club Sunday and Monday. The lineup could get a face lift.

“We’ll qualify again this week and take 10 to Clarke,” Green said. “It could be a totally different lineup.”

Green said the tourney won’t be as demanding.

“Clarke will be easier than this weekend,” Green said. “We won’t be the only non-scholarship school. There will be quite a few (Iowa) conference schools and a lot of NAIA schools.”

Sunday’s round is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
