Caligiuri Defeats Carter for At-Large City Council Spot

Oskaloosa, Iowa- Oskaloosans elected Joe Caligiuri to the at large spot on the city council Tuesday. Caligiuri defeated former City Councilman Jimmy Carter receiving 445 votes to Carter’s 324. Caligiuri won in all of the city’s wards as well as in absentee votes.  Over 700 people cast a ballot in the At-Large race.

In other Oskaloosa election news, Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt received 675 votes in his unopposed bid for reelection.  Newcomer Jason Vanzetten recieved 207 votes in his unopposed bid for the City’s Fourth Ward council spot. Second Ward Incumbent Tom Jimenez was re-elected with 122 votes. Jimenez was also running unopposed.
In other Mahaska County Election news, Virgil Roorda received 48 votes, and Donald Baker received 42 votes in their bids for Barnes City City Council. Roorda and Baker were both elected. Steve Robertson received 19 votes. Nick Robertson was also elected Mayor with 47 votes.

In Beacon, Ken Allsup, Thomas Van Der Veer, and Richard Thomas are projected winners by the Mahaska County Auditor’s Office for City Council. Derick Sellers and Ron Feree both received 8 votes. Mayor Shawn Maxwell was re-elected with 19 votes.

In Fremont, Cynthia Purdy and John Van Zante were both re-elected. Purdy received 41 votes and Purdy received 61 votes. Both were running unopposed. In the election to fill a vacancy in on the Fremont City Council, Yvonne Gabby Evans received 21 votes and Michele Rupprecht received 52 votes. Rupprecht was the projected winner. Edd Elder was elected Mayor receiving 66 votes in his unopposed bid.

Voters in Keomah Village passed a Public Measure that would change the terms for City Council members to four years and have them up for election in staggered years. 24 people voted Yes and 2 people voted no in that election. Larry Boyer, Craig Coen, and Clark Johnson all received 29 votes in their unopposed bids for City Council. Amy Sarver received 27 votes in her unopposed bid for City Council. Write in Candidate Jane Rudie received 24 votes.

All incumbents in Leighton were re-elected, each received 16 votes. Mayor David Gleason, and Council Members Keith Beintema, Charles Bogaard, William Bruxvoort, Kimberly Sytsma, and Henry Van Roekel were all re-elected.

Dustin Hite was elected Mayor of New Sharon in a landslide. Hite received 166 votes to Zach Pickard’s 39 votes. Larry Applegate and Lisa Munn both ran unopposed for the City Council. Applegate received 179 votes and Munn received 144 votes.

In Rose Hill, Mayor Barbara Schultz was re-elected with 15 votes. Wilda Collister and Seth Farlow were elected to the City Council with 16 votes, Terry Lowe was elected with 17 votes, and Kyle Morgan was elected with 14 votes.

University Park will be holding a run off for their City Council. Ben Doak was the projected winner by the County Auditor’s Office receiving 56 votes. Arlen Phillips and Zac Samuels will both compete in a run off election for the final spot. Phillips received 50 votes and Samuels received 39 votes. Colleen Platt received 38 votes and John Doty received 16 votes in their bids for the City Council.

All results from the County Auditor are unofficial until canvassed by the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors on Thursday.
