Brace from Jimenez as WPU Rolls Past Under-Manned Mustangs 4-1
Cedar Rapids–Leonardo Jimenez (So., Mexico City, Mexico, Business Management) scored twice and the William Penn men’s soccer team took advantage of having an extra player for much of the game as it defeated Mount Mercy 4-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Tuesday.
WPU (6-0-5, 4-0-3 Heart) remained void of a loss by outshooting the Mustangs (5-4-2, 4-3-1 Heart) by a 16-6 margin.
Andrea Brugora (So., Milano, Italy, Business Management) opened up the evening’s scoring at the 9:32 mark when he put away a ball from Jedin Lee (Jr., Durban, South Africa, Sports Management).
The Mustangs answered in the 24th minute, but the Statesmen took the lead back for good exactly two minutes later. Alexander Greaves (Sr., Hertford, England, Sports Management) scored the game-winner with the assist going to Nick Nkansa-Dwamena (So., London, England, Business Management).
More impactful, though, was that the MMU goalkeeper received a red card after the play, leaving the hosts with just 10 individuals on the pitch.
The Statesmen used that to their advantage on two occasions with Jimenez doing the damage both times.
The sophomore scored unassisted in the 42nd minute, and then put the game away by finding the netting at the 57:35 mark. Rob Stoop (Jr., Bosch en Duin, Netherlands, Exercise Science) assisted on the game’s final goal.
Greaves and Max Mayer (Jr., Wendover, England, Exercise Science) paced the offense with three shots apiece, while Sil Milder (Fr., Arnhem, Netherlands, Sports Management) stopped two Mustang attempts Tuesday.
“We are happy with the result,” Assistant Coach Milton Magana said. “I do not think it was our best performance as there are things we need to tweak overall as a team. With that said, I am pleased that we were able to score off set pieces because that is something we have been working on. It is now time to recover, break down film, and do everything properly to prepare for our next opponent this weekend.”
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host William Woods in Heart action at 4:30 p.m.
