Bonds Wins 133-LB Frosh Title at Luther Open
Decorah–Scottie Bonds (Fr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) was excellent in his collegiate debut to lead the Statesmen wrestling team at the Luther Open Saturday.
The Open was so thick in both in quality and quantity that grapplers were split into two divisions–Elite and Freshmen. Numerous top wrestlers from perennial powers like NCAA Division I Iowa and NCAA D-3 Wartburg highlighted talent-filled brackets.
Bonds, competing in the freshmen division’s 133-pound weight class, defeated opponent after opponent for a 5-0 record and the crown. He won three matches by major decision and one by fall before edging Connor Campo of Wartburg 9-7 in the finals.
Andrew Gorman (Fr., Madison Heights, Mich., Business Management) also had a big day in the freshmen 125-pound class. He finished 4-2 with one major decision to place fifth.
Ishmael Rempson (Jr., Olympia Heights, Ill., Industrial Technology) was a tourney champion two weeks ago in the season opener and had a nice showing against even tougher competition. The junior 165-pounder was 2-2 (one fall) in the elite division. He ended the Open one win shy of placing in the top six.
Michael Corley (Fr., Atlanta, Ga., History/Government) was a multiple winner as well, being victorious twice in the freshmen 157-pound weight class.
141-pounder Marshawn Lacy (Jr., Chicago Heights, Ill., Computer Science) and 285-pounder Nathan Veverka (Sr., Montezuma, Iowa, Industrial Technology) both pinned a foe in elite action, while 149-pounder Lane Colwell (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Computer Science) and 197-pounder Kyle Soderblom (Jr., Newton, Iowa, Biology) also won once.
Freshmen division falls were recorded by 133-pounder Trey Busick (Fr., Pleasantville, Iowa, Industrial Technology), 141-pounder Logan Loftus (Fr., Marengo, Iowa, Industrial Technology), 157-pounder Joshua Wooten (Fr., Belleville, Mich., Physical Education), and 285-pounder Skip Conner (Fr., Madison Heights, Mich., Business Management).
