Bonds’ Title Highlights Strong Effort at Simpson Invitational

Indianola–Scottie Bonds (So., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) finished off a perfect week with a dominating showing as the William Penn wrestling team competed at the Simpson Invitational Saturday.

One of four navy and gold grapplers to place in the top six, Bonds was unstoppable at the event with a 5-0 record to win the 141-pound title. The sophomore, who is now 6-0 on the season, pinned his first four foes and then defeated Steven Morey of Labette CC by a major decision of 16-5 in the championship match. He was forced into the second period just once prior to the finals.

133-pounder Adam Habeil (So., Mulberry, Fla., Physical Education) and 197-pounder Kyle Soderblom (Sr., Newton, Iowa, Biology) both placed fourth with identical 4-2 records. Habeil had four falls, while Soderblom managed a trio of pins.

Khalil Williams (Fr., Decatur, Ga., Physical Education) was also 4-2 (three falls) to place fifth at 125 pounds.

Bryan Pittman (Sr., Flossmoor, Ill., Information Technology), at 149 pounds, and Jay Fresh (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Sociology), at 165 pounds, both went 3-2. Pittman had one pin and Fresh pinned two opponents and had a technical fall over another.

149-pounders Brad Watson (Jr., Rolla, Mo., Physical Education) (one major decision) and Lane Colwell (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Computer Science) (one fall, one technical fall), 184-pounder Nick Wise (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz., Biology) (one fall, one major decision), and 197-pounder Aaron Allen (Jr., Bolivar, Mo., Secondary Education) (one fall, one major decision) all managed a pair of victories.

Jeremy Andujar (Fr., Tampa, Fla., Biology) pinned one man at 125 pounds, while Jeremy Walters (Jr., University Park, Ill., Exercise Science) had a major-decision victory at 165 pounds. 141-pounder Kionte Crocker (Fr., Brandon, Fla., Industrial Technology), 149-pounder Marshawn Lacy (Sr., Chicago Heights, Ill., Computer Science), and 174-pounder Jordan Lockhart (Fr., Lawton, Okla., Communications) also had their hands raised Saturday.

Next Up: William Penn is off until after the holiday break, returning to action on Saturday, January 3 when it hosts the William Penn Open. Action begins at 9 a.m.
