Alcindor’s Record Leads to POW Honor
by Wade Steinlage
Oskaloosa–Marlon Alcindor (Sr., Queens, N.Y.) hit from everywhere last week, and his long-ball barrage led to him to earning Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week laurels Monday.
Alcindor collected his first-ever weekly award after helping the Statesmen (6-0, 2-0 Heart) to two blowout wins over Culver-Stockton and Evangel.
The senior was nearly perfect against C-SC, going 10-for-11 overall (7-for-8 3-PT) en route to a 29-point performance. He then somehow bettered that outing against Evangel, scoring 36 points on 12-for-16 shooting from behind the arc.
Alcindor’s 12 trifectas set a new school record, breaking the old mark of 10.
For the year, Alcindor is averaging a team-high 24.2 points per game in addition to 3.8 rebounds; he has also tallied five assists, three steals, and one block. Most impressively, though, the senior wing has made 67.3% of his three-pointers (35-for-52) and is 68.0% overall from the floor (51-for-75). He is also 80.0% at the free-throw line.
Nationally, Alcindor leads NAIA Division I in both total three-pointers made and three-pointers made per game (5.8). He is also fourth in overall scoring average, fifth in three-point percentage, and seventh in field-goal percentage.
The award is the first for the team this year.
