Obituary:
Alberta Sutton-Sanders was born November 18, 1914 in Cordova, Iowa the daughter of John G. and Nora (Love) Slykhuis.
She was raised in the Red Rock area and attended country school. In 1935 Alberta was united in marriage to Merle Oliver. To this union four children were born: Naomi, Wilma, Phyllis and Merle, Jr. Merle died in 1959 and Alberta was later married to Robert Sutton. She and Robert lived in the Newton and Reasoner areas many years. Alberta worked on the assembly line at Maytag for 23 years prior to retirement. Following Robert’s death, Alberta married Leonard Sanders. Leonard was in a band and Alberta enjoyed listening to them practice and attending the band’s events. She and Leonard also liked to dance. Alberta enjoyed sewing and quilting, and had made many items for family and friends through the years.
Alberta passed away on Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Griffin Nursing Center at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 14 days.
In addition to her parents, Alberta was preceded in death by three husbands: Merle Oliver, Robert Sutton and Leonard Sanders; daughter, Naomi Kimzey; siblings: Johnny Slykhuis, Ethyl Mavin and Grace Worthington; 2 grandsons and 1 great-granddaughter.
Those left to mourn her passing include her children: Wilma Vohl (Raymond) of Knoxville, Phyllis Hall (Jim) of Killeen, Texas and Merle Oliver, Jr. of Goldrun, California and many grand, great and great-great grandchildren and other family members and friends.
