A Little Prep Makes Controlled Burns Safer
Oskaloosa News sat down with Oskaloosa Fire Captain Adam Haroldson and underscored the importance of conducting controlled burns responsibly.
Making sure you let emergency responders know that you are conducting a controlled burn is helpful, says Haroldson. “You can call the Oskaloosa fire department. That number is 641-673-3541, and you can call us anytime and say hey, we’re going to be burnin’ will note it will let the 911 Center know.”
Then, false alarms are reduced unless the 911 Center hears from the property owner that the burn is out of control.
“Controlled burns are essential for removing dead vegetation, but it’s crucial to do it safely,” Haroldson said. He encouraged property owners to establish clear perimeters and natural fire breaks to prevent unintended spread. “If a controlled burn becomes unmanageable, don’t hesitate to call 911 immediately,” Harrelson advised.
