The Oskaloosa Freshman football team moved to a 2-0 record on Friday night as they beat the Fairfield Trojans by a score of 49-13.

The game started with the defense holding the Trojans giving the Indians great field position. Colin Snitker scored on the first offensive play going 50 yards to score the first touchdown. Carson Genskow came on the field and kicked his first of 7 extra points on the night. The next defensive series the Indians gave up a long touchdown to the Trojans and they missed their extra point to make the score 7-6. On the next kick-off, Darryl Fane raced for 92 yards to put six more points on the scoreboard to get the Indians rolling again. On the very next defensive series, Osky’s defense was fired up and forced a fumble with Colin Snitker picking it up and scoring from 25 yards out to make the score 21-7. The next defensive series was a quick 3 and out as the defense was building up steam and the Indians received the ball with good field position. Schultz hit Genskow on a nice 26-yard pass completion to get the ball down to the 6-yard line and then Darryl Fane finished off the drive with a 6-yard run to make the score 28-6. On the next defensive series, the Indians again took the football away from the Trojans with Colin Snitker coming up with his second fumble recovery. The Indians then moved the ball down the field with another nice completion to Genskow and then Darryl Fane scoring from 9 yards out to make the score 35-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started out strong for the Indians as the defense was able to get the Trojans to turn over the ball on downs to get the ball back to the Indians. The offense then scored on a great run by Will Schultz from 73 yards out to make the score 42-6. With another defensive stop, the Indians got the ball back and scored on a pass play from Schultz to David Nelson to make the score 49-6 at halftime.

The offense started the second half and there were new faces taking on the workload as Tristen Disney, Kyadin Yang, and Dalton Plate was carrying the load in the backfield. The second half went by quickly as the defense continued to play great football but did give up 1 long play to make the final score 49-13.

The Defense ended the day with 19 different players making plays for the Indians. Colin Snitker was the leader with 10 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries. Landon Hunolt had 8, Plate, Hafner, and Fane all had 6, Yang and Opheim had 5, Chavez and Braden had 4, Feudner and Beerbower had 3, Genskow, Nelson, Westercamp, Bloodsworth, and Cavan had 2, while Tighe, Cross, and Shilling all had 1. Altogether the Indian defense held them to 115 yards of rushing and 139 yards passing.

On the offensive side, the Indians offensive line came away with a great performance as they averaged more than 13 yards a play as Blake Westercamp, Warren Feudner, Will Cambell, Christian Cavan, and Cason Shilling worked hard all night long for the Indians. Osky ended up with 183 yards rushing with Schultz having 73 yards and 1 TD, Snitker 67 yards and 1 TD, Fane with 25 yards and 2 TD’s, Yang with 7 yards, Plate with 11 yards and Disney with 1 yard. On the Passing side, the Indians ended with 104 yards as Schultz had 61 yards while completing 3 out of 4 attempts and 1 TD while Plate had 43 yards on 2 completions on 2 attempts during the game. Receiving for the Indians was Genskow with 3 catches for 73 yards and Nelson had a couple of catches for 31 yards and 1 TD.

The Special team side of the ball was one of the greater areas of success on the night as the Indians competed well in this area. The Indians had 157 yards on kick off returns with 1 touchdown between Fane, Nelson, and Chavez. Punt return yardage was 61 yards on the night with Schultz and Fane and 1 blocked punt. On PAT’s the team finished 7 for 7 as the line allowed little push and Hunolt the snapper, Schultz the holder and Genskow the kicker were all in sync during the game.

The week the Freshman Indians will travel to Norwalk to take on the Warriors starting at 4:45.
