Oskaloosa, Iowa – The position for city council at large has two open seats this election cycle, and four individuals are seeking those. The incumbents Scottie Moore and Tom Walling are being challenged by Wyatt Russell and Charlie Comfort.

Russell came to the Oskaloosa area when he was five years old, and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 2005.

Russell has previously worked in the heating and air conditioning industry and then became the building inspector for the city of Oskaloosa for two and a half years before moving to Mahaska Health Partnership in facilities.

Russell ran an unsuccessful campaign for Oskaloosa City Council four years ago.

Russell says he was initially hesitant on running for city council this year but decided that his experience as a building official offered him a unique perspective.

Russell believes that his time in the building inspector position helped him see what was working and what wasn’t working. “There was a lot of stuff that I did that made no sense, but it was the adopted code. Finally, it came down to that I’m a policy enforcer and not a policymaker. Now I have a chance to run for council and become a policymaker and correct some of those silly policies we have.”

“I’m vested in the community, and I want to do everything I possibly can to make the community a better place for my kids in the future,” added Russell.

When it comes to asking for your vote for council, Russell said, “We’re staying on the same consistent path. My personal motto is complacency kills.”

“I think it’s time for a little bit of a shakeup and get a little bit of a fresh perspective on the council,” added Russell. “A younger perspective.”

“I want to be able to have more of that younger perspective for our community and hopefully spur a little bit more growth and bring in younger people and sustain the younger environment in our community,” said Russell.
