Indians Claim First Round Win Over Chariton

Oskaloosa freshman Mary Nelson tracks down the ball from her Chariton opponent.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – A first round win for the Oskaloosa Girls’ Soccer team helped to set the stage for a rematch against Newton.

When Newton and Oskaloosa last met on April 25th, Newton pulled off a 2-3 win. “We know it’s going to be a tough game, especially with Brittney being out.”

The Indians victory came at a cost, when Brittney Demoney went out with an injury to her knee during the Chariton matchup.

Head Coach Jodi Steinlage said she was proud of the team for stepping up into different positions as a result of injuries.

The matchup between Chariton and Oskaloosa was a physical game, and Steinlage was proud of her team for keeping their composure.

“That could have easily been seven or eight goals, we’ve just got to get a little more oomph on our shots,” said Steinlage. “Probably our best passing game as far as people moving off the ball.”

Lacking that pepper on goal shots, Steinlage says that sleeping habits and the fatigue from have less structure now that the school year is out may be part of the issue.

“Definitely, the opportunities were there,” said Steinlage of the team’s scoring potential. “Now we just got to make sure that we finish them.”

“We will have to do the same thing on Tuesday against Newton if we want to have a chance in getting a little payback for an earlier 2-3 loss to them. We know it is going to be tough with the injuries we have, but I believe the girls are going to come out and give it their all. If we play tough and take advantage of our opportunities, we will be able to give Newton a run for their money,” said Steinlage.

Oskaloosa goalie Kinsey Cook had a quiet night, as the Oskaloosa defense stymied Chariton.

Oskaloosa sophomore Emily Lunsford score two goals. Sophomore Aleeya Cheney kicked in the final goal for the Indians.
