Dutch multi-eventers within strike distance at league meet

Central College

STORM LAKE — At the halfway point of the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon, four Central College athletes are near the top of the leaderboards following Thursday’s opening day at the Iowa Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Emma Drees (senior, Waukee) and Morgan Koenigs (senior, Mapleton, MVAO HS) sit at No. 2 and No. 3 in the heptathlon with 2,632 and 2,521 points, respectively. In the decathlon, Will Daniels (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) and Ryan Kruse (junior, St. Clair, Minn.) are No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. Daniels has 3,267 points while Kruse is right behind with 3,241.

Drees finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.67 seconds) and high jump (5 feet, 1.75 inches), notching a career-best mark in the high jump. Koenigs had lifetime bests in the 100 hurdles (15.67 seconds) and shot put (31-8.5) while placing third in both events.

“The women were really solid today,” associate head coach Jim Fuller said. “There wasn’t really any downs and they had some good marks. Emma high jumped really well, and I was really happy with Morgan’s hurdles and shot put.”

With the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run looming tomorrow, Drees and Koenigs will have to make up some ground to catch leader Courtney Sowles of Wartburg College and her 2,863 points.

“(Emma and Morgan’s) work is cut out for them,” Fuller said. “Courtney’s good in all three of those events. I think they both have a chance at their overall bests and I’d be pretty happy with that.”

Daniels had the best high jump (6-4.25) and long jump (20-9.25) while setting lifetime bests in the 100-meter dash (11.56 seconds) and 400-meter dash (54.73 seconds). Kruse put the shot 43-10 for a season PR and the best mark in the field, but Fuller was most pleased with his trio of career-best efforts in the 100 (11.67 seconds), 400 (55.29 seconds) and high jump (6-2)

“Ryan was solid all day and high jumped well,” Fuller said. “I think he’s happy with his effort. Will struggled a bit in the long jump, he was just a few centimeters short of his best. He actually took off from behind the board, which is too bad because it was big jump.”

Day two consists of the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter run. A tight race at the top sees Isaac Frazier of Simpson College leading with 3,508 points and Wartburg College’s Ben Cuvelier third with 3,266 points.

“It’s a good and close decathlon,” Fuller said. “There’s a couple of things we need to iron out. It’ll come down to the pole vault for Ryan and for Will it will be about the hurdles and throwing events. It should be a fun meet tomorrow.”

The heptathlon and decathlon will continue Friday morning starting at 9 a.m. Other field events start at 1 p.m. and the running events for the rest of the meet start at 2:30 p.m. with the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
