City of Oskaloosa Press Release

Continuing to build on the many recent successes of Oskaloosa’s downtown revitalization, the City of Oskaloosa is about to launch into the construction phase of a project that will rehabilitate the facades of 16 buildings in heart of the community. This project builds on the momentum of the many other revitalization efforts in the community. Some of these highlights include the Signature Project of the Year Award from Main Street Iowa, the development of “The Alley”, the “Christmas in July” celebration, and the holiday-themed “Painting with Lights.” This façade project also follows the numerous building improvements made by many private entities, such as recent investments from Oskaloosa Downtown Development, True Value, and the Brickhouse Café.

Construction will begin on approximately May 10 and is expected to last through the end of the calendar year. The first buildings to be rehabilitated will be 117 High Avenue West (Sherwin-Williams), 115 High Avenue West (former Broken Spoke), and 113 High Avenue West (Hunter’s). Construction will be concentrated in the 100 block of High Avenue West into July before heading to the 100 block of North Market Street and eventually further east in downtown.

Christner Contracting, Inc., based out of Ottumwa, is the general contractor for the project and has emphasized the importance of avoiding interference with regular activities in the area. The project team will work to ensure that access to all properties will be maintained throughout the construction. As with any construction project, there will be some disruptions along the way, but efforts will be made to keep these to a minimum and to keep the downtown clean.

If concerns arise during the project, please contact Andrew Jensen, City of Oskaloosa Development Services Director, at 641-673-9431 or Andrew.Jensen@oskaloosaiowa.org.
